Debbie

Group Exercise Instructor

From Debbie:  I have enjoyed being part of the MAC family since 2005. The parks and recreation field has been my vocation for 42 years, 29 years of which have been with Henrico County. I have been active in my avocation, the fitness field, as a teacher for 27+ years, teaching a little bit of everything. I am currently certified in ACE GX, AFAA GX, Step & Yoga, Star 3 Spinning Instructor, Pilates, PiYO, and I am Yoga Alliance registered as an E-RYT 500, CRYT and YACEP. I started practicing yoga in the ‘60’s because I was a Beatles fan and the Beatles were into Transcendental Meditation, a form of yoga. I bought a little book with lined drawings of poses and taught myself from that. I practiced through middle and high school, getting sidetracked in college. I was running 30 to 40 miles a week then which eventually took a toll on my body, bringing me back full-circle – I went from doing yoga at home in the 1960’s, to running, to group exercise and back to yoga. I love teaching and my mission at a very fundamental level is that yoga or whatever your fitness activity needs to be fun for you to keep coming back. To really enjoy their practice, people make a connection with other classmates and the instructor. My favorite part about teaching yoga is creating community, seeing someone have an “ah-ha” moment in the middle of the class. It takes a lot of courage for someone to come to class especially if they haven’t been doing any other exercise. I love to see people lose their self-consciousness and see someone choose to take a child’s pose or other modification, because when that happens, they are empowered to make their own choices which they then carry off the mat and into their personal lives. When not coordinating special events or teaching, I keep up with 3 parrots (yes they talk!) and we travel the country showing antique autos in the Antique Automobile Club of America. My husband and I have a collection of early muscle cars and mini cars which we have restored. Our cars range from a 1930 Model A to big motor early muscle Chevys, Fords, Pontiacs and Volkswagen Beetles!
